BKY STUDIO: Rebecca Dreyfus

Growing up in the midwest, I've always had a deep connection with nature. Whether it be watching thunderstorms from my porch, wandering around in the muddy creek in my back yard, or digging for rocks and fossils as a kid, I feel like those early memories shaped how I've created as an artist and how that translates into my work without even knowing it. During my undergrad years in art/design school, I became infatuated with how organic shapes in nature could be juxtaposed with sharp, architectural lines found in city development. Alongside that, I started becoming interested in mopeds and motorcycles and learning how to build small engines in my spare time. After finishing my BFA in Photomedia in my hometown Lawrence, KS at The University of Kansas, I set my sights for Chicago to explore the bustling city. While living there, I felt like I was in a creative slump with my photography and began creating jewelry with found objects such as crystals, charms, leather, brass, bones, etc. It was then that I started falling in love with the process of creating wearable objects and working with my hands. After moving back to Lawrence, KS I began studying metalsmithing and taking classes to learn more. My love for sharp, clean lines and beauty found in nature started showing through in jewelry without me even knowing it as well as my interest in building small engines into making jewelry was a gratifying process. I love the idea of creating pieces that are striking and soft at the same time. Masculine and feminine are equal parts too. Since then, I've moved to Portland, Oregon and slowly making this place home. The mountains and the ocean make my heart soar as well as the agate and jasper rich earth this part of the United States has. Finding ways to romanticize the beauty that the world has to offer into everyday wearables has become my passion and thus BKY STUDIO was born. Metalsmithing is a craft you can never stop learning about, and to me that's incredibly rewarding.
